Department of Religious Studies Scholarship Application

Religious Studies majors and minors only. By completing this Religious Studies Scholarship Application, students will qualify for all of the Religious Studies scholarships for which they are eligible. If you believe you are qualified for any of the Religious Studies scholarships below, please include any pertinent information in your scholarship essay on the application.

Rev. Larry and Mrs. Gloria Angus Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to junior or senior RELS major or minor planning to pursue religious/vocational training in any faith tradition after graduation.
Eligibility:
-Full-time, regularly enrolled junior or senior majoring or minoring in Religious Studies
-Minimum 3.0 GPA
-Clear intention of attending a school of religion of any faith after graduation

Bernita L. Thompson Endowed Scholarship for Undergraduate Research and Writing
Eligibility:
-Full-time, regularly-enrolled student in the College of Arts and Sciences who is also enrolled in RELS 4323 Religious Studies Capstone
-Minimum GPA of 3.0
-Awarded to the student who writes the top research paper in the RELS 4323 Religious Studies Capstone course

Timothy Cole Stephenson Scholarship
Eligibility:
-Full-time, regularly-enrolled major who is also a junior in Religious Studies
-Minimum GPA of 3.0
-Demonstrated excellence by achieving the highest overall GPA of Religious Studies juniors
-Students may not be awarded more than once.

Heather Nicole Stephenson Scholarship
Eligibility:
-Full-time, regularly-enrolled major who is also a senior in Religious Studies
-Minimum GPA of 3.0
-Demonstrated excellence by achieving the highest overall GPA of Religious Studies seniors
-Students may not be awarded more than once.

David D. LeNorman Scholarship for Religious Studies
Awarded to a junior or senior RELS major who demonstrates academic excellence and an interest in religion and ethics.
Eligibility:
-Full-time, regularly enrolled students in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Religious Studies
-Junior or senior
-Minimum 3.0 GPA
-Students are required to submit a scholarship application and an essay that demonstrates a personal commitment to living an ethical life.
-Students may be asked to interview with the selection committee.
-Students who have already received this award are eligible for subsequent awards.

Make a Difference Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time RELS student who demonstrates a desire to make a difference with his or her RELS degree.
Eligibility:
-Full-time, regularly enrolled students in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Religious Studies
-Sophomore, junior, or senior
-Minimum 3.0 GPA
-Students are required to submit a scholarship application and an essay that demonstrates how a University of Oklahoma education can be used to serve humanity and impact the world.
-Students may be asked to interview with the selection committee.
-Students who have already received this award are eligible for subsequent awards.

Angus Family Religious Studies Scholarship
Awarded to a junior or senior RELS major or minor active in the program with demonstrated financial need.
Eligibility:
-Full-time, regularly enrolled major or minor in the Religious Studies Program (graduate or undergraduate)
-3.0 or higher GPA
-Demonstrates need for supplemental financial assistance
-Students who have already received this award are eligible for subsequent awards.

Tom W. Boyd Endowed Scholarship for Religion and Education
For a student pursuing graduate study or a career in education (seminary, teaching, etc.)
Eligibility:
-Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the College of Arts and Sciences (graduate or undergraduate) majoring or minoring in Religious Studies
-At least a 3.0 GPA
-Planning to pursue a career in education, including seminary, teaching, etc.
-Demonstrated need for financial assistance
-Students who have already received this award are eligible for subsequent awards.

Supplemental Questions
  1. In a maximum of 500 words, describe how you demonstrate academic excellence and a strong interest in religion and ethics. Provide specific examples of your achievements in coursework, research, or extracurricular activities that highlight your commitment to academic success.
  2. In a maximum of 500 words, describe how you plan to make a meaningful difference with your Religious Studies (RELS) degree. Reflect on how your understanding of religion, culture, and society can positively impact your community, workplace, or the broader world.
  3. Compose a statement on how your education has been and will be financed. Please explain the importance of a scholarship to your financial needs related to your undergraduate or graduate work and your career goals. Address any special circumstances as to why a scholarship might be helpful to you. (Please answer in 300 words or less.)

    Please include any additional information that could help us make financial need-based scholarship decisions, including if you are self-supporting (paying for college without parental or third-party assistance), a first-generation college student, or you are a non-traditional student.
