Department of Film and Media Studies Scholarship Application
Currently enrolled students in good standing with the University of Oklahoma Department of Film and Media Studies are eligible to apply for scholarships via the Department of Film and Media Studies Scholarship Application.
In order to be eligible for some need-based Department of Film and Media Studies scholarships, eligible students must complete and submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

- Undergraduate students enrolled in 12 or more credits per semester
- Graduate students enrolled in 9 credit hours, or 5 credit hours and have a .5 appointment as a GA or TA.

Al LaValley Memorial Writing Award
This award recognizes the best essay written on a film, television, or media studies topic
- Must be a Film and Media Studies Major
Jeanne Hoffman Smith Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to support to high need majors in the department.
- Must be a Film and Media Studies Major
- Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on 4.0 scale
- Must have demonstrated financial need
Kaid/Karriker Film and Media Studies Scholarship
Jeanne Hoffman Smith has established a yearly FMS Award of $1,000.00 named for two of the key faculty members responsible for establishing the Film and Video Studies program at OU. The award is to be used for a film or media-related program/workshop or institute anywhere other than OU. Winners may apply the funds to professional or technical training classes, travel to conferences or archives, to provide financial support during unpaid internships, or any other academic opportunity that will supplement the student’s FMS major coursework.

- Must be a current Junior or Senior
- Must have a minimum 3.25 GPA on 4.0 scale

The award is to a student recognized for the best essay written on film, television, or media studies. To be considered for this award, please upload an essay on the above mentioned topic(s).
- Currently enrolled juniors and seniors may apply for the Kaid/Karriker Film and Media Studies Scholarship. The award is to be used for a film or media-related program/workshop or institute anywhere other than OU. Please attach a 250-word essay describing how you would use this award.
- For students applying for the Kaid/Karriker Film and Media Studies Scholarship,this award requires one letter of recommendation from an OU Film and Media Studies faculty member. Please provide the name and email address of your reference below and click "Save and Keep Editing" or "Finish and Submit" to generate an email to your recommender.You can check the status of your recommendation by clicking on the “References” tab at the top of the page.
Your reference will be automatically contacted via email to submit an electronic recommendation on your behalf. The deadline for your reference to submit the letter of recommendation is February 1, 2024. If your recommender does not receive the email, contact scholarships@ou.edu. It is your responsibility to ensure that your recommender receives the email request and submits his/her recommendation prior to the deadline. - Letter of Recommendation Waiver
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 gives students the right to inspect letters of recommendation written on their behalf for an application for financial assistance. Students may waive this right and keep letters of recommendation confidential. This waiver is voluntary and is not a condition of any award. Scholarship committees may place higher value on letters of recommendation that are submitted confidentially.
